Lung Cancer Calculator
Overview
The Lung Cancer calculator uses the Lung Cancer eRAT to determine a patient’s risk of having lung cancer based on the most recent data received from the clinical system for that patient and additional data that may be added by the user.
Usage
The lung cancer calculator is designed to be used by a clinician to calculate a patient’s risk score of lung cancer.
Technical Specification
Mandatory Items
The patient must be aged 40 or over.
A platelet count must be supplied, and this must be greater than 0.
All other symptoms are optional, and assumed to not exist if not supplied.
Inferred Items
Abnormal spirometry is inferred if the patient’s latest recorded FEV1/FVC ratio is < 0.7 or their latest recorded FEV1/FVC percentage is < 70%. If neither of these values is supplied then abnormal spirometry is not inferred.
Raised platelets are inferred if the patient has a platelet count > 400.
In order to determine the smoking status of a patient the following logic is applied in order:
If the latest light/heavy or moderate smoking code is on the same date as the latest current smoker code then the patient is set as a light/heavy/moderate smoker.
If the smoking status is not determined and the date of the latest Smoking Status code matches the latest Current smoker code the patient is set as a moderate smoker.
If smoking status is still not determined and the latest Current Smoker is within the last 20 years, but there is a later Smoking status code the patient is set as an ex-smoker.
They are also set as an ex-smoker if they have an ex-smoker code within the previous 20 years.
Ex-smokers are considered to be non-smokers if they stopped smoking 20 years or more ago.
If a smoking status has still not been determined, but they do have a smoking status code the patient is set as a non-smoker, alternatively their smoking status is set as unknown.
Risk Scoring
A risk greater than 5% is considered HIGH (RED)
A risk score of between 2% and 5% inclusive is considered MODERATE (AMBER)
A score of less than 2% is considered LOW (NO COLOUR)
